You may now ask yourself why it is better to get the best longboard for beginners than to get started straight away with a professional longboard.
The answer is easy. Beginner boards help you build confidence in the device. As learning anything is almost the same, One might pick the most expensive violin but that won’t make him Paganini over night!
Since standing on a longboard is still a new experience for many, it is not advisable to go straight for the most professional board. With a beginner’s longboard, you can acquire the movement sequences bit by bit and slowly develop into a certain riding style like a pro.

What are the characteristics of such a beginner longboard?
As already mentioned, a good longboard for beginners should by no means dictate the riding style. It is important that your development towards a certain type of driving is open and that you are not chained to any driving style from the start.
Another factor is the ideal board length. This is of course also variable. However, a length of 90-100 mm is recommended, as most beginners are used to much smaller boards or no boards at all. This in turn quickly leads to irritation when it comes to the extreme deck length of such a longboard. Even if such short board lengths lose stability with increasing speed, they are still suitable for relaxed rides and learning purposes.
Advanced riders adjust the flexibility of their board, i.e. the flexibility of their deck, to their weight. For a beginner, this property is rather secondary. A firm footing and a lot of stability are important, which means a beginner board should have little flex. In this way, you achieve stiff, skateboard-like flexibility and the rider gets a firm footing.
Not only the flexibility but also the mounting of the axles play a role in the first purchase. Please note that you can choose between two types of mounting: top mount or drop through.
With the top mount deck, the axis is screwed to the underside of the board from above, just like with the classic skateboard. However, this makes pushing and braking difficult for most beginners. The large distance to the ground also unsettles them.
This is not the case with drop-through. Drop Through Decks have a cutout on their underside through which the truck can be attached. The lower center of gravity is more comfortable for beginners because the distance to the ground is very small. In some cases, your feet still hit the castors at the beginning, but that can be dealt with quickly. So as a beginner you should tend towards the Drop Through Deck in order to be able to learn to drive without great difficulty.

How to choose a longboard?
Choosing a longboard is not an easy task. You have to take into account several parameters, including the shape, material, wheels, trucks, driving style and the place where you want to ride. The price of longboards corresponds to their quality. If you decide on a longboard for a low price, except that it will be made of low-quality materials and there is a risk that it may break during a jump.

It is divided into 3 categories.
1. City In the city, the longboard is used as a means of transport. To make your ride as comfortable as possible, it is better to choose a shorter to medium longboard or a mini-longboard (cruiser), which has softer wheels.
The board should have the back part (tail) raised. The raised tail is called a kicktail. By pressing the kicktail, the front part of the board with wheels will rise and you will be easier to overcome, for example, a bollard or other larger obstacles.
2. City, parks and trails If you are going to city parks and bike paths, choose a classic pintail longboard . The pintail longboard is characterized by its shape resembling a fish or an elongated drop. You can also choose DT longboards.
Boards exceeding 105 centimeters in length and significantly profiled boards with a low height suitable for downhill are not suitable for driving in the mentioned terrains.
Remember: The higher the longboard, the faster it reacts and turns, but on the other hand it is less stable. The advantage of low longboards is greater stability even when driving at high speed, but the disadvantage is poorer dexterity.
The Longboard Top-Mount combines DT and pintail elements. He takes over the cut-outs from DT, which prevent the wheel from coming into contact with the plate during a sharp turn, and from the pintail, it carries the lower attachment of the trucks. Thanks to this, this board is agile, sensitive to turning and it is possible to perform dancing (tricks) with it.
3. Hills and roads If you are going on trips outside the city, choose the style you want to ride. You will choose from the categories of carving, freeride and downhill. Carving is a downhill style in which you enjoy cutting arches.
The boards for this riding style are suitable for dancing. Freerides are boards for downhill and sliding. The tracks have a DT mount, so the boards are low to the ground and more stable at higher speeds.
For downhill, typical are very profiled boards (on the board you will find two tracks in which you insert your feet) with a low center of gravity. The boards are thick and rigid and are driven down steep hills.
The board of the Longboard
The board is the basis of the entire longboard. Its shape, length and construction determine for which type of riding it is suitable. If you are just starting to ride a longboard, we recommend reaching for the most universal type, ie pintail. Once you find out which riding style will be best for you, it is possible to adjust the board according to the necessary parameters. The boards have many shapes, which depend on the driving style.
1. Cruising Boards are suitable for driving around the city, they are comfortable and easy to learn. The shapes of the boards can be the following:
- Pintail – This is the most common shape of a plate resembling a fish or an elongated drop. The board is usually flat and suitable for complete beginners. The longboard with this board is suitable as an “approach” from point A to point B and is especially suitable for the city. Their characteristic elements are wide trucks, wide wheels and softer bushings.
- Double kick – this is a shorter version of the cruiser. The shape is kick-shaped, the board has skate trucks and narrower wheels. The characteristic features include the low weight of the longboard, so it fits into the city, but it is also possible to do tricks with them.
- Bantam – they are usually made of plastic, they are smaller boards with skate trucks and wider wheels for crossing unevenness (gravel, joints…).
2. Freeride The boards are characterized by a better set-up designed for fun and tricks. The concave of the board is better, just as the trucks and wheels are better. The boards can have a specially modified board with visible cutouts on the wheels.
- Top mount – Trucks are mounted to the board from below. These are hybrid longboards that have better stability and, thanks to their shorter length, allow you to trick similar to a skateboard. You can choose hybrids for downhill, freeride, or carving.
- Drop-Thru – Trucks are mounted from the top of the board in a Drop-Thru manner. The wheels are therefore closer to the board, but thanks to the cutouts, their collision with the board are prevented. In addition to being a way of holding tracks, it is also the shape of a board, which is characterized in that the means of the board is lower than the trucks. The trucks can be attached in two ways. First Drop-Thru – boards are mounted from above. Secondly, the Drop-deck – the board is shaped so that it is a means lower than the place of attachment of the truck. Thanks to the reduced center of gravity, longboards have good stability and can be used for both downhills and freeride.
- Double kick – it can be compared to a larger skateboard with two feet.
3. Downhill This is a speed discipline. During the descent, he drives at speeds above 60 km / h, there is no limit at the upper speed. Downhill longboards are hard, so they have good stability, are curved for better cornering and their length is around 95 cm. The trucks are longer for better stability, the bushings have a cylindrical shape. The wheels tend to be larger, wider and softer.

Several types of wood and other materials are used for the production of boards, which give the board certain properties and thus predetermine it for a certain driving style. The most commonly used maple and bamboo, birch and combinations with laminate. The board consists of layers, which can be from 2 to 11. The number of layers and the material affect the properties of the board. Maple is the hardest wood, so it is mainly used to make downhill longboard boards. Bamboo wood is flexible and in combination with maple is used for carving, freeride or city.
A truck is a metal structure that is bolted to a plate and carries wheels. You may encounter two types that affect the driving style and board control.
Vertical kingpin – not so common, it is based on a skateboard truck but differs with a wider hanger (the part that carries the wheels). Due to the size of the board, this truck is more powerful. Its application is suitable for boards on which you will ride in skate parks. The stiffness is adjusted using a nut or by exchanging the bushing for a harder or softer one.
Reverse kingpin – appears most often on longboats in our country. You can recognize it from the previous one thanks to the angle of inclination, which can be 35 °, 42 °, 43 °, 45 °, 50 °. Thanks to the angle of inclination, the truck has better geometry, rotation and stability. Stiffness is changed by tightening or loosening or replacing the bushing. These trucks are suitable for carving, freeride and downhill.
You will find the bearings under the label ABEC 1, ABEC 3, ABEC 5, ABEC 7, ABEC 9. The numbers do not indicate quality, but production accuracy and running speed. The bearings with the lowest production accuracy bear the ABEC 1 designation, while bearings with the ABEC 9 designation achieve the highest production accuracy. If you want quality bearings, always choose those from well-known manufacturers. In general, a bearing from an unknown manufacturer, but marked ABEC 9, may be of lower quality than a bearing from a known manufacturer marked ABEC 3. Bearings marked ABEC 1 have the lowest manufacturing accuracy and are the slowest. ABEC 9 bearings, on the other hand, have the highest production accuracy and faster operation.
Wheels on a longboard
The driving characteristics of the wheels are influenced by several factors, including dimensions, shape, contact area, hardness and center position. Large wheels are characterized by slower acceleration but are faster than small wheels. Soft wheels have a better grip than hard wheels, but they are slower. However, on rougher surfaces, driving on soft wheels is smoother and faster. A hardness of 80a is recommended for driving on normal roads.

The contact surface of the wheel is the one that comes into contact with the road or other surface. Its size ranges from 30-80 millimeters. The wider the contact area, the better the wheel holds on the surface. The edges affect the grip of the wheel. Rounded edges hold worse, but you better pull them into the slide. The square holds better again. The properties of the wheels are also affected by the position of the center, which can be threefold:
- Center-set – the center of the wheel is at the same distance from the right and left edges. The advantage of these wheels is that you can turn them if they are more worn on one side than on the other (similar to roller skates ). These wheels break well into a slide that lasts longer and you don’t lose speed with it as with off-set wheels.
- Off-set – the wheels have a center located between the inner edge and the middle of the wheel. These are the most commonly mounted wheels for longboards in the Czech Republic.
- Side-set – the center of the wheel is flush with the inner edge. The characteristic feature is the best grip, the wheels hold well and are difficult to pull into the slide. You lose speed when sliding, but thanks to good grip, the wheels are easier to control.
Driving style and type of wheels
Carving and cruising – for this style of driving, it is advisable to choose wheels that handle the uneven surface of roads and city streets. The size should be between 60 mm and 75 mm, hardness is recommended around 80a. The wheels should have sharp edges, a large contact area and a side-site or off-set center.
Downhill – 70-80 mm wheels with a hardness of around 80a-83a are suitable for downhill runs. The edges should be sharp and the contact area large. In order for the wheels to hold well, it is advisable to choose an offset center.
Freeride – reach for the wheels with a round edge and the center either center-set or off-set. The hardness 82a of the wheel predetermines a better plucking into the slide.
Selection of bushings
Bushings are made of polyurethane and can be cylindrical or conical, you can find them on the hanger. These parts are created in various ways when cornering, thus ensuring a smooth turn. The harder the variant you choose, the harder it will turn you, but you will have better stability (suitable for downhill). With softer bushings, they turn better again, but they have worse stability (suitable for carving). Each truck carries multiple bushings. Thanks to the possibility of their combination, you can achieve optimal truck properties. Larger cylindrical bushings have greater stability and stiffer turns. Cone bushings are less stable, but easier to turn.
Types of washers
The washers are installed between the trucks and the board. They are used for several reasons. The washers increase the distance between the wheels and the plate so that they do not come into contact. The wheels cannot lock and neither the plate nor the wheels can be damaged. Another advantage is that the pads reduce the vibrations that are transmitted from the trucks to the board and from the board to the rider’s legs. You can also decide to use the so-called angle pad, which changes the angle of the truck, and thus its geometry, stability and rotation.

Longboards are all the rage and enjoy growing popularity. The distance between the individual axes is visibly wider and larger rollers are used than on skateboards. As a result, the drivers benefit from enormous stability, comfortable driving characteristics and high speeds. In this section Let’s see how you can avoid the typical beginner mistakes.
The right longboard for beginners?
Many beginners make the mistake of buying a longboard and choose an unsuitable or wrong longboard. In general, you shouldn’t just pay attention to the price and save money at the wrong end, because quality has its price! You can get inexpensive longboard models in stores for less than 100 euros.
Many beginners make their purchase decision too quickly, let themselves be tempted by low prices and place too little value on quality. The best thing to do is to avoid any problems and opt for a higher quality model. A higher-quality longboard costs an average of $150 to $300 and has high-quality and durable trucks and rollers.
Mini cruisers and pintail longboards are particularly suitable for beginners and enable relaxed driving. Downhill longboards are suitable for higher speeds and are not recommended for beginners. If you already have some experience, you should look around for a high-quality longboard (from around 250 euros). Such a model is best suited for tricks (dancing) or sliding and is recommended for advanced users.
Compared to other sports, beginners learn longboarding comparatively faster. How easy it will be for you to get started and how quickly you learn to ride depends primarily on the longboard you choose. A beginner-friendly longboard should have the following properties:
- a deck as wide as possible, which offers you enough space
- Rollers that are as soft as possible so that you benefit from good grip
- If possible, a drop-through assembly (for the lowest possible road holding)
Bodyweight and shoe size:
Many beginners make the mistake and take into account when buying neither its weight nor their shoe size. A longboard is suitable for different weight classes.
The number of layers of wood used is decisive for the load. Longboards with 4 to 5 layers of wood are suitable for drivers with a normal stature up to a maximum of 100 kilograms. If you weigh more and have a strong stature, you should opt for a board with 8 to 9 layers of wood.
In addition to weight, your shoe size plays a role when choosing a board. Before you buy a board you should make sure that it is big enough for your feet. You can easily check this by placing a foot (across the direction of travel) on the deck and it fits completely on the surface.
Many beginners want to start driving as soon as possible and pay far too little attention to safety. Especially in the early days, you are more likely to fall and injure yourself. Quite a few beginners neglect the safety recommendations and trust themselves too much.
Most of the time the whole thing turns out to be safe, but this does not always have to be the case. In the worst case, you will injure yourself in the beginning and then either fear or no longer want to go longboarding. With the necessary safety equipment and the right attitude, you reduce the risk of injury and you will have a lot more time with your board. Please keep the following in mind:
- Always wear joint protectors on your knees, elbows and hands and never ride without a helmet
- concentrate fully on your longboard and don’t let yourself be distracted
- In the beginning, drive as slowly and sensibly as possible and avoid any risk
- avoid wet tracks due to the high risk of slipping
- practice falling regularly
It all depends on the right balance
If you have a good sense of balance, longboarding will be a lot easier for you. In the beginning, practice on a level surface if possible and first of all avoid curves. With simple exercises, you can gradually improve your balance and this has a positive effect on your driving skills.
The best training for a better balance is regular practice on the longboard.
First train while standing and at slow speeds and only gradually increase the pace. Learning to longboard has nothing to do with age. However, you need enough practice and you should be in a suitable physical condition.
Accelerate, steer and brake
Start with the important basic techniques first and practice them as often as possible. First of all, you have to get your longboard going. For this purpose, you can either push (immerse) or pump the longboard. When pushing, you get the board going with simple pedaling movements, while when pumping you accelerate exclusively with slalom movements.
Unfortunately, many beginners make the mistake of mixing both techniques or focusing on the much heavier pumping for long distances. In the beginning, concentrate primarily on pushing.
To do this, stand with one foot facing the front of your board and do a slight squat. With your back leg, you get your longboard going by regularly dipping it. The pushing is reminiscent of the classic acceleration of a scooter.
Take time to think about which foot you want to stand in front of. Most drivers use their left foot and dive with their right foot.
This technique is called “Regular”. Alternatively, you stand with your right foot in front and use your left foot to dive.
This technique is called “Goofy”. Both techniques are equally easy or difficult. It is best to try both techniques and simply decide based on your driving experience. As soon as you have brought your longboard to a sufficient speed with pedaling movements, you can put both legs on the board and enjoy the ride.
First gain driving safety
If you have decided on state-of-the-art technology, you should first gain some driving safety. Many beginners make the mistake and get started right away. They often look for a route that is far too difficult and give up disappointed or even injured.
You should only drive on the correct routes if you have sufficient driving safety. For this purpose, it is best to go to a parking lot or on a lonely path. Make sure that the surface is as smooth as possible and has as little slope as possible.
Stand exactly in the middle of your board and calmly test how flexibly your board reacts to your body. Squat down, bend your knees and then try different positions.
This will gradually improve your balance and get a feel for longboarding. Change your foot position and your stance without leaving the longboard. The stance varies with your riding style. Ideally, your stance should be a little wider than your shoulder width.
If you want to go fast with the longboard later, for example, downhill, then a wider stance is more suitable and gives you more security.
Uncontrolled braking causes problems for many beginners
You can bring your longboard to a standstill in different ways:
- with the classic foot brake
- by simply rolling out
- by jumping off immediately
- with the wind brake
Not every technique is recommended for beginners! The easiest and most effective way to bring your board to a stop is with the foot brake. To do this, place your back foot on the ground and use it to apply pressure. The more pressure you use, the faster your longboard will stop. It is best to practice the footbrake until you have mastered it completely safe. Only then do you start with the other braking techniques.
Basically, you don’t have to do anything when rolling out. You just stop pushing and let your board roll out in peace on a straight stretch. You should only consider jumping off if the speed is correspondingly low. If you jump off at a high speed, this can end up dangerous for you. For the wind brake, you make yourself wide on the board and use your body to provide enough air resistance.
Steer the longboard in a controlled manner
Steering is basically very easy and quick to learn. The more you have shifted your weight to one side, the more your longboard will lean in that direction. Due to its low weight, the longboard tilts quickly when subjected to a load, so you can steer it in any desired direction without any effort. In the beginning, practice steering on the straight and easy route possible. Over time you can increase the difficulty of the terrain and with enough practice, you will even master tight curves.
